  Steven Rehfeld

Steven Rehfeld’s oil, mixed media and acrylic paintings explore the relationship between the progressive cutting edge, between personal and cultural, between the figure and social landscape, between the human figure and iconography. His compositions are explorations in color contrast and negative-positive space and allow the fusing of abstract art with realism art. “My paintings create a dialog about how the immaterial touches the material”. His art represents the foundation, the metaphor and the interpretation of mythology.

Rehfeld earned a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He continues to paint in the tradition of Diebenkorn, Frank Lobdell and other California painters as a viable aesthetic enterprise for the postmodern era. Like the bay area painters of the 1950’s Rehfeld seems to draw inspiration from the existential zeitgeist of the Abstract Expressionists, yet like them, he does not totally reject the figure.

The artist, Rehfeld has exhibited in New York, Florida, Southern California, San Francisco, Hawaii and Quebec, Canada.
